FAQ

Why buy a tiny-house on wheels?

The clientele varies as much as the reasons to choose this type of building. From experience, we can say that the typical customer is far from the stereotype of the hippie who wants to live disconnected from society. Indeed, our first buyer was a well-off person with luxurious tastes who wanted a second cottage on his huge lot. Why not build a house on foundation or pilings? Simply because he was not allowed to. The regulations in many areas does not allow to have more than one unit on foundation, but can accept a mobile unit. Thus, a tiny-house on wheels with four seasons insulation became an interesting solution for him.

We have another client who opted for a tiny house because she travels 90% of the time as part of her job. This type of house allows her to have stability when she is back home, and to rent her house the rest of the time. Another client saw the benefit of a Minimaliste home in terms of mobility. Wishing to become an owner, not wanting to restrict herself to living in a fixed place, she chose to invest in a tiny-house on wheels.

Choosing a custom built has several benefits. We design the space according to the specific needs of our customers. In fact, the client of the Laurier model had medical restrictions limiting her mobility at times. Being able to design her house to measure allows us to adapt it to her reality considering her real needs.

The customer of the model Sakura decided to opt for a micro-house on wheels from an ecological point of view. For her, reducing the quantity of her goods, reducing her living space, and reducing her energy consumption was a way to be more eco-friendly and to participate in the fight against climate change. In addition, because the regulations are less strict on Saskatchewan lands, Sakura has its own address and tax account, which makes it much easier.

In short, the tiny-house movement attracts several types of individuals for several reasons. It allows people that intent to move often to preserve the layout, design and everything that makes their home adapted to them, without having to buy something else and start from scratch. While this kind of house may not for everyone, it is certainly able to meet the needs of many!

What makes your company expert in tiny-house on wheels?

Since 2015, our company has truly evolved. The complexity of the first models we built has allowed us to gain considerable experience in the construction of THOWs. Our after sales service has also allowed us to collect the testimonials of customers who live in our homes, to confirm our ideas and also to improve. The climate of Quebec is one of the most intense climates for the integrity of any building, it pushes us to design high-performance buildings, which can persist from -22F to 90F.

Our homes are made based on Quebec construction standards and we have developed our expertise in terms of structural bracing, insulation, heating and ventilation system, water filtration and solar energy, among others ! High quality materials, attention to details, ensuring a long-term product durability. At Minimaliste, everything is done internally from A to Z, this is how we can control the quality of our products as much as possible.

How much can a Minimaliste house cost?

It is difficult to establish a fixed cost for this type of building. The reason is simple; each individual has different needs, and each specific need brings its challenges . In return, our personalized service makes it possible to create a product that meets the customer’s requirements as much as possible. To get an idea, expect to pay between $ 75,000 and $ 160,000 CAN before taxes and delivery for turnkey units from 153 p / c to 340 p / c. Cost vary by size, insulation, integrated systems, appliances, interior and exterior cladding, etc. Our company has developed its own construction technique to adapt this type of house to the climates of Quebec, in addition to being constantly in research and development to improve the techniques and produce high performance buildings.

What are the financing options available?

Minimaliste does not offer any financing services at the moment. However, based on the experience of some of our clients, it is possible to obtain financing from your financial institution. The most frequently used funding works the same way as a recreational vehicle. You have to do business with your financial institution and apply for a recreational vehicle loan. Obtaining this type of financing for a tiny house depends on the client’s credit. The interest rate varies from 4 to 7%, and a down payment of 20% is to be expected. In addition, insurance for such a type of vehicle applies in the same way as an RV. This type of loan is considered a personal loan, not a mortgage. This means that the financial institution takes the tiny-house as a collateral, owning the building until full payment of the loan. This detail is important to consider for individuals who plan to buy a tiny-house from an individual; if the seller has not completed the full payment of his loan, the buyer could have bad surprises! Alternatively, you can always try to put together a good record with supporting plans and photos and present it to a bank for a mortgage loan, stating that it is for residential use and not recreational. Financing institutions have already shown they can be flexible, but it’s always case by case.

What technical points should you consider prior to start your project?

Where will your house be installed? What services will be available for your home? Do you have access to drinking water, electricity, a septic tank? If you do not have any land, will you look for one with services of the city or more off-grid? What is you total budget? Do you have access to financing from your financial institution? What are your priority needs? What are the goods you can’t get rid of? The answers to these questions are important for both you and us. These informations guide us when designing your home. As the space of the house is limited, it is important for you and for us to know what you need to be happy in your new environment. At Minimaliste, some elements are not optional, as they may alter the integrity of the building and the resale value of our products. It is important to consider this from the beginning, as it must be planned in your budget.

How long can the construction of a tiny-house on wheels take?

Once the reservation is made on our order list, a customer can expect to wait between 1 and 8 weeks before being ready to sign the sales contract, plans and design completed. For a new design, we always make a series of detailed plans. Once the sales contract is signed, we order the trailer and there is a delay of 4 to 6 weeks before the reception. It is always possible to make a down payment to order the trailer before the plans are finished, so it can accelerate the construction process.
From day 1, the construction can last between 4 and 12 weeks, depending on the size of the house and sometimes, depending on the selected materials and their availability.

When you talk about small, sustainable buildings, what do you mean exactly?

We mean that the choices of materials and construction techniques are made according to produce buildings that will last in time. We also want to simplify our customer’s life by giving them the opportunity to maintain their homes themselves using standard renovation techniques. In addition, the term “sustainable” is used in the same sense as sustainable development. The ecological footprint of this building is reduced to a minimum. In addition to the fact that our tiny-houses are mainly made of wood, both the structure and in the interior and exterior finish, our factory construction process minimizes the waste generated by the construction of our buildings. In addition, the small volume of the mobile building combined with its superior insulation (R23 in the walls, R38 in the floor and R38 in the ceiling) make the heating and electricity costs very low.

What sets you apart from other tiny-houses companies Quebec and even elsewhere in America?

Minimaliste puts a lot of emphasis on the design of his buildings. How does a self-sufficient tiny-house work?

We recommend you first establish your real need in autonomy before investing in such a system. By experience, wanting a self-sufficient home without having a real need can take a good part of your budget and deprive you of an amount that could have been used elsewhere. In addition, if this system is only little or almost not used, the wear of the batteries is at the expense of your actual use of the system. That being said, there are several options available if you think that such a system is necessary for you. It is also important to know the services offered on your land prior to invest in any off-grid system.

Electricity: A typical system includes solar panels installed on the roof or near the house in the field, a group of batteries to accumulate the current, an inverter to convert the DC current of batteries into AC power for different appliances in the house . Solar panels can be replaced by any system generating a current (tidal, wind, etc.). Energy-consuming appliances such as washer / dryer will work on 110/220 AC or propane. Lights, composting toilet fan, USB outlets and low consuming appliances will run on 12V DC.

Heating: To heat an off-grid house, the main source must be propane or natural gas. Heating or tempering accounts for most of the electricity consumption of any building. Whether it is a direct heating unit or a glycol floor, propane / gas is the answer.

Running water: You have different options. If you do not have running water on your property, a potable water tank can be placed into your home, but can also be installed underground on your property. Companies offer filling services and maintenance is easy. Once the water source is identified, the home connection is done with a standard hose and a 12V pump supplies the various elements of the house. (shower, sinks, dishwasher, etc.). If the water comes from a well or the city and you are in a freeze zone, you need to install a heating wire to the inside of the house, like a mobile home.

Wastewater: The greywater discharges gather under the house and are connected to one pipe. It is therefore possible for you to install a gray water tank or to throw it all into a septic tank if your land is equipped with it.
