Overview/features

With a wingspan of 10.5 x 34.5 feet, The Magnolia is considered a ‘’park model’’ size tiny house. It was built to withstand northern Ontario weather and is inspired by our Ébène and Laurier models. Our clients wanted a single loft and a full height bedroom on the main floor, like featured in the Laurier. On the other hand, they also wanted to include a TV area in a ‘’bump out’’ like in our Ébène model. Since they chose a custom unit, they also wanted a unique interior design including their own ideas based on their specific needs. Working along with them, we created the house based on their requirements, keeping the Minimaliste style. Here is a more detailed presentation of this project.

  • Standing bedroom
  • 32×42 shower
  • Kitchen with peninsula

Design

Interior

For the very first time, we designed a tiny house with a white painted ceiling instead of the typical stain we usually use. Indeed, this aspect of the interior design makes the house much brighter and the addition of darker beams creates a contrast, also matching the other stained wood elements in the house. The interior layout is created so that there is a large open area for the living room and another for the main floor bedroom. The central loft under which the bathroom is located can serve as a storage space as well as a guest room. The house is equipped with a LUNOS heat recovery air exchanger and two ceiling fans for a good dispersion of heat or air conditioning.

Exterior

Staying true to our habits, we chose a two-tone cedar arrangement horizontally and vertically for the Magnolia exterior cladding. The difference this time is for the black color, we used a special type of cedar, burnt using the Shou Sugi Ban technique. This is the best way to have an opaque black color without the risk of altering the wood or seeing the color quickly fade with exposure to sunlight. The two dark tones for cedar along with the black windows give a lot of character to the outside of the house. All the steel transitions are also black and they tie up the exterior elements together.

Living room

With a large window on each side, the lounging area in the Magnolia is one of the brightest we’ve designed so far. The built-in furniture in the TV area makes all the difference in this living room, facilitating the optimization of the space and allowing to install a standard size sofa. Behind is a double rod closet, which is also the location of the the electrical panel and the power supplies for the LED strips. Above the TV area is the main heating unit. This “mini-split” provides heat and air conditioning and is one of the best solution for tiny homes.

Kitchen - Dining room

The kitchen in the Magnolia is more than functional; it contains a tall pull-out pantry, tons of cabinets and drawers as well as a full range of appliances. Indeed, this ergonomic space features a dishwasher, a built-in oven and induction cooktop and an apartment size fridge. This is also where we installed the BOSCH stackable washer/dryer. The peninsula formed by the extension of the quartz countertop serves as a dining table and work surface. It also creates a separation between the kitchen and the living room and is meant to include three bar stools. With the LED backlighting, you can adjust the mood in the kitchen. On the styling front, the black handles on the Shaker style cabinet doors blend well with the other elements featured in this part of the house, such as the sliding door rail and the faucet installed on the farm sink.

Master Bedroom

Just like in the Laurier model, our customers wanted a bedroom on the main floor. The absence of loft above this area gives an amazing feeling of height that can clearly be felt when lying on the bed. The windows on each side increase this effect just as it does in the living room. For storage, we included bedside tables and a very large wall mounted cabinet. In addition, the king size bed features a Kangaroo-type mechanism that allows to use it as additional storage.

Bathroom

Located between the kitchen and the master bedroom, the bathroom of this high-end unit contains all the necessary elements for optimal use. Access is on both sides with a sliding french door. There is a large vanity with quartz countertop above which we installed a backlit medicine cabinet containing a lot of space. On the same side, we’ve put a Nature’s Head Composting Toilet over a standard toilet connection. If needed, our customers can connect to an existing sewer system. In front, there’s the mechanical room where we installed the 40 gal. hot water tank, the double filtration system and additional storage space. Adjacent to this closet is a 32×42 shower with glass door that blends perfectly with the darker color of the cedar ceiling.

Loft

The loft in the Magnolia will most likely be used for storage, but can accommodate two guests overnight. We can install a double size bed and the half-wall provides privacy for people that are sleeping downstairs. There are windows on both sides of this loft, allowing natural light to fully penetrate this area.

Customizable

In all our models, many elements are optional: heating floor, materials choices, skylight, solar systems, etc. The design elements are chosen by the customers, but can me modified to fit your own preferences. In short, all options and features depend on your budget as well as your personal needs.
